The small cell and femtocell company, Ubiquisys has announced deployment of its GM7 multi-mode cell for indoor public spaces in small cell programs. The new Ubiquisys cell supports LTE, 3G-HSPA+ and WiFi and is designed for use in a wide range of public spaces.

NTT DOCOMO has developed a dual-mode small-cell base station, or femtocell, supporting 3G (W-CDMA) and LTE simultaneously. The dual-mode femtocell will be commercially launched from December and offers for improved service coverage in indoor locations such as offices, shops and homes.

Mobile data services provider ClearSky Technologies has signed a multi-year contract with NEC to offer Femtocell as a Service (FaaS) to regional GSM/UMTS wireless carriers. Femtocell as a Service offers an alternative approach to launching services for many carriers.

To deliver high quality mobile broadband voice and data services, telecommunications service provider Telenor has selected small cells technology from Alcatel-Lucent. Under a new global frame agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will provide Telenor with  small cell base stations to support its customers.

NEC has launched new indoor LTE Femtocell base stations for telecom carriers. The base stations will be available in the second quarter of 2012. The new product is available in two models, one designed for enterprise and another for residential customers. 

Femtocell

A Femtocell is a device used to improve mobile network coverage in small areas. Femto cells connect locally to mobile phones and similar devices through their normal GSM, GPRS, UMTS or LTE connections, and then route the connections over a broadband internet connection back to the mobile network, bypassing the normal cell towers.
