Alcatel-Lucent trialing 4G LTE voice calling and high definition video streaming with Cox Communications

in News, LTE

January 27, 2010 | Alcatel-Lucent today announced the trial of IMS-based voice calling and high definition video streaming over a wireless network using fourth generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The trial used Cox’s AWS and 700 MHz spectrum acquired at Federal Communications auctions in 2006 and 2009 to support its wireless plans, which include wireless broadband.

“Our selection of Alcatel-Lucent was based on its leadership, experience and expertise not just in LTE technology, but also in its ability to serve as a strategic partner as we transform our network,” said Stephen Bye, Cox’s vice president of wireless.

For the trial, Alcatel-Lucent provided an end-to-end LTE solution including base stations (eNodeB’s), Evolved Packet Core (EPC), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and a wide array of professional services.

“The success of this trial is a strong endorsement of Alcatel-Lucent’s innovation and forward-looking capabilities as we work closely with Cox to support its network transformation and LTE strategy,” said Ken Wirth, President of LTE/4G Solutions for Alcatel-Lucent. “Currently, Alcatel-Lucent is actively engaged in some of the most significant LTE deployment projects announced to date, now including Cox Communications. We look forward to helping Cox expand its service offerings to deliver a mobile broadband capability and expand the availability of sophisticated multimedia services and content to its subscribers wherever they are.”

To date, Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE solution has been selected by operators for trials around the globe, including both lab and field trials with Tier 1 operators in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Alcatel-Lucent is a worldwide leader in LTE and founder of the ng Connect Program, an industry program driving an open LTE ecosystem of devices, content and application partners. With ng Connect, wireless broadband operators benefit from open innovation, reduce time to market with LTE-enabled services, and the ability to drive new and non-traditional business models.
