NEC Provides High Capacity Trunk Microwave Systems

in press-release, NEC, LTE

Tokyo, April 23, 2012 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the availability of its new trunk microwave communications systems, the 5000iP Series, featuring 1.6 times the transmission capacity of existing 5000S systems.

The new 5000iP Series supports full packet networking for long-distance communications of up to 50 kilometers between metropolitan and mountainous areas where it is difficult to lay optical cable. The new systems are well suited for strengthening trunk networks with LTE and 4G communications, and they support full packet, high capacity communications that reach 1.6 times (4Gbps) higher than existing 5000S products. The compact design of the 5000iP Series enables carriers to flexibly install the systems within offices and other areas of limited space.

Carriers in Zambia and Tanzania have already placed orders for the new systems.
NEC aims to sell approximately 10,000 units globally over the next three years.

Primary features of the system include:

High capacity trunk communications support
The new system supports full packet (IP) networking, time-division multiplexing (TDM) and bundles numerous lines together to enable high capacity transmission of 400Mbps - 4Gbps.
Moreover, in addition to maximizing transmission volume with a Cross Polarization Interference Canceller (XPIC, *1), the new system also automatically changes the modulation method and the transmission rate in response to wireless link quality as well as optimizes transmission capacity in response to weather conditions thanks to Adaptive Modulation Radio (AMR) functions that improve throughput.
Collectively, for the first time, these features enable wireless transmission of high capacity packet data for mobile core networks.

Highly reliable network construction
In addition to the wireless functions supported by existing 5000S products, the new systems also support Gigabit Ethernet. As a result, in the event of a network obstruction, Ethernet protection functions carry out high speed route conversion and Ethernet Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) functions enable end-to-end network observation. These functions ensure the provision of highly reliable trunk communications and data transmission.

Compact design for convenient installation
The new system is 40cm lower than the half-rack standard (*2) set by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and its volume is 20% more compact than existing products. This enables carriers to more flexibly install the systems within offices and other areas of limited space.

Going forward, NEC will continue to globally promote the expansion of carrier network business by capitalizing on advanced wireless transmission technologies and high quality, highly efficient manufacturing techniques.
