Timing Advance in LTE - Type 1 vs. Type 2

in LteWorld Forum

Dear Friends,

I am trying to understand the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Timing Advance in LTEi.

Please can one of the LTE Gurus illuminate?

Here is an excerpt from 36.305

8.3.1 General
In the Cell ID (CIDi)-based method, the UEi position is estimated with the knowledge of the geographical coordinates of its serving eNodeBi. Enhanced Cell ID (E-CID) positioning refers to techniques which use additional UE and/or E UTRANi radio resource related measurements to improve the UE location estimate. For E-UTRAN access, these measurements may include [20, 21]:
UE measurements ([20], [21]):
- Reference signal received power (RSRP);
- Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ);
- UE Rx – Tx time difference.
E-UTRAN measurements ([20], [21]):
- eNB Rx – Tx time difference
- Timing Advance (TADV):
- Type1: TADV = (eNB Rx – Tx time difference) + (UE Rx – Tx time difference)
- Type2: TADV = eNB Rx – Tx time difference;

Thanks.

Cheers,

Kal

Refer 36.214: 5.2.4 Timing

Refer 36.214:

5.2.4 Timing advance (TADV)

Definition Type1:
Timing advance (TADV) type 1 is defined as the time difference

TADV = (eNB Rx – Tx time difference) + (UEi Rx – Tx time difference),
where the eNB Rx – Tx time difference corresponds to the same UE that reports the UE Rx – Tx time difference.

Type2:
Timing advance (TADV) type 2 is defined as the time difference

TADV = (eNB Rx – Tx time difference),
where the eNB Rx – Tx time difference corresponds to a received uplink radio frame containing PRACH from the respective UE.

5.2.5 eNB Rx – Tx time difference

Definition The eNB Rx – Tx time difference is defined as T eNB-RX – TeNB-TX

Where:
T eNB-RX is the eNB received timing of uplink radio frame #i, defined by the first detected path in time.
The reference point for TeNB-RX shall be the Rx antenna connector.
T eNB-TX is the eNB transmit timing of downlink radio frame #i.
The reference point for TeNB-TX shall be the Tx antenna connector.

Distance-More Question

We have "propagation delay"=234m in 3G and "TA"=500m in 2G.
LTEi Gurus ,What unit is used to measure distance EnodeB to UEi and how to convert it to metre ?? Type 1/Type 2??Thanks
